Maria Philippi and The Northern Light

One of the series I really like from Maria Philippis hand is Nordlys (Northern Light). The series is from 1963.

I love the blue, blue colour and especially I like the almost majestic shape of the vases. The design is simple and so the decoration. Just a rosette and then the glaze doing the rest of the job - and symbolism. The way the glaze is running from the sun-like rosette is similar to the way the light moves on the sky when Northern Light occurs.

To symbolise the sun she has used a rosette very similar to the rosettes in Ancient Mediterranean pottery. But has given it a eaven tighter expression to suit the shapes of the pieces in the series. A job very well done - to my opinion.
